Home for the Homeless project
YMCA Trivandrum is organizing various public health and community service programmes for the people in Trivandrum and its suburbs. Every year we are constructing houses for needy persons as part of our Home for the Homeless Project. This year we supported the purchase of 3 cents of land for constructing a house at Thrikkannapuram by Mr. Samuel. He is staying with his ailing wife, a cancer patient, in a small rented house. Thanks are due to the various donors and to those who took the lead in making the project successful.
Career Guidance Coaching
Career Guidance Coaching programme for High School students was organized in 3 batches. 175 students have benefited by the programme.
Vocational training programme
The 1st batch of Tailoring and Embroidery coaching class for women of Vallavilai was started on 1st June 2018 as part of Okhi Rehabilitation Programme. 61 women including the 33 Okhi affected widows attended the course. The duration of the course was one year.
Skill development trailing for young women who have completed their basic education was organized at Vallavilai. The course commenced on 1st July 2018. 83 young women attended the course. The duration of the course was 3 months.
MEMBERSHIP & EXTENSION
There were 354 Full Members and 790 Associate Members (including 39 women) during the year; 199 of them are Life Members. 31 applicants were given Associate Membership during the year under report. Total student membership stands at 1722.
Founder’s Day and Induction Ceremony
Founder’s Day celebration and the Induction ceremony of the full members were organized on 12 June, 2018. Rev. Dr. M.O. Oommen, Vicar, St. Thomas, Mar Thoma Church, Pattoor was the Chief Guest. 18 Christian Associate Members were inducted as full members of the YMCA.
Inauguration of UNI-Y Activities
Justice (Rtd.) Cyriac Joseph, former Judge of the Supreme Court (currently LokAyukta, Kerala) inaugurated the activities of Uni-Y and the Women’s Forum on 11 December 2018. He delivered a lecture on “The Mission of Religions in Secular India”.
Summer Skill Training Programmes
Summer Skill Training classes were held from April 4 to May 28, 2018. Sri Mathew T. Thomas, Hon’ble Minister for Water Resources, Govt. of Kerala inaugurated the Summer School on 16 April 2018. Children in the age group of 4-17 attended the sessions held in various disciplines. 380 children attended classes in Creative Skill Development, Wonders of Magic, Kids’ Moulding Programme, Catch Them Young, Life Skill Training Programme, Vedic Maths, Public Speaking, Guitar and Keyboard, Shuttle Badminton, Roller Skating, Table Tennis, Chess Coaching and Karate classes were also conducted as part of Summer Skill Training programmes. A Face to Face with Cine Artist Smt. MallikaSukumaran was organized for the students of the Summer School on 4 May 2018. Introduction of Indian Music and a face to face Programme with KumariSaranya B. Mangal, Veena Artist was organized on 30 April 2018 as part of the Summer Programmes. A one day trip to Palode Botanical Gardens and Mankayam waterfalls was arranged for the children of Summer School on May 2018. The Valedictory Function of the Summer School 2018 was organized on May 26, 2018. Smt. SubhaLekshmi, Cine Artist was the Chief Guest.
Sangotsavam 2018, Talent Competition for High School Students, was held on August 15, 2018. Dr. George Onakkoor, Novelist, inaugurated the competition. Students from various schools participated in the events.
‘Sahitheeyam’ (Literary Forum)
‘Sahitheeyam’ (Literary Forum) is a monthly get together of lovers of Literature, Film, Drama and Art for discussion on themes related to these facets of our culture. The following themes were covered in the monthly programmes, during the year.
A discussion on Short Story was held on 16 April 2018. Smt. Chandramathi, Short StoryWriter delivered the talk.
ആശയവേദി (Forum of Thoughts)
ആശയവേദി (Forum of Thoughts) is a forum for academic, dispassionate and inclusive exchange of ideas and opinions on relevant themes, with a view to analyzing and understanding concepts and events in the right perspective. The following themes were covered in the monthly programmes.
HOSTEL & GUEST HOUSE
YMCA K. George Students’ Hostel continued to provide accommodation to the students of various institutions and the International Guest House provided neat and safe accommodation for transients at reasonable cost.
The beautification works of YMCA Campus including construction of an Open Auditorium has been taken up and completed, making the premises clean and colourful with flowering plants over.
Prayer Hall & Member’s Lounge
One of the major successful efforts of the committee was the work done for setting up the Prayer Hall and the Members’ Lounge in YMCA Buildings.
